CHAPTER 7
The wind had picked up substantially, no longer a gentle breeze. It swirled and tossed any debris lying around. Erick and the guys watched food wrappers and plastic bottles roll down the street. Already burning to the north, the fire’s smoke was drifting south, obscuring the sun. The filtered sunlight made the day have the look of an old black and white photograph.
Goosebumps trickled down Erick’s spine. The dry air along with the wind made the firefighters nervous. Everyone in the fire station was tense, anticipation running high. They all watched as the clouds began to build into massive thunderheads along the mountain range to the east. Dry lightning strikes were a fact of life. The dark clouds overhead looked like they should cause a torrential downpour. Erick knew the dry winds, and the heat of summer caused the moisture to evaporate well before it hit the ground. Living in Casalobos all his life, he knew it wasn’t a question of if, but when the next firestorm came to call.
As it was, they were on edge waiting for the call out to come. It was going to come down to them either staying to protect the town and surrounding areas, or they might have to travel to one of the fire fronts. That was a call that Cal Fire was going to make. Right now, they were on standby.
California was in the fourth year of a severe drought. Any spark at all and the whole damn county would go up in flames. Hell, the whole damn state could burn up. It was only the first part of July, and there had already been a couple of smaller fires in different counties. If you added in the May and June fires, this could be the worst fire season since 2007/2008. They’d been lucky with those earlier fires; they had been easily put out. But they had still grown to several hundred acres. And the wind hadn’t played any part in spreading the fires.
Firefighters in this part of the state were always in fear of several smaller, separate fires growing and merging. There was also the fear of a whole shit load of fires happening all at once like what had happened in San Diego County back in 2003. Those fires had burnt almost four hundred thousand acres.
Adding to the worries was the fact that they’d had enough rain to cause the underbrush to grow fast, then dry out and die. There was more fuel than they wished. Erick hoped the citizens of Casalobos had done their jobs of clearing the weeds. They were to clear at least hundred feet from around their homes and at least six feet high up into the trees. The hope was that would keep a fire from leaping from the ground to the trees.
Chief Danielson moved next to Erick in the door of the truck bay. “I don’t like the looks of that thunderhead. It’s already larger than the rest.”
Erick followed his finger and saw the one chief meant.
